Being abroad during World Cup/Euro, Euro 2008

If my current plans come through, I'm going to be living in Germany while the Euro 2008 is going on in its neighbors, Austria and Switzerland.

I was wondering if anyone had been abroad (and as a self-centered Yankee, what I mean by that is "outside of the US") during the World Cup or the Euro was going on, what is was like, and how different it was from the US.

I've been aboard while England was playing (World Cup) and was staying petty close to where the stadium was, so I was able to hear the England fans singing Danny Boy well into 4am in the morning. While I was in Germany the people were always smiling and would assist you whenever you needed help (I think they where after my money, not sure). As for America I've never been there so I really couldn't tell you the difference from USA to Germany, but what I've seen form T.V. people are always getting shot so Germany should be a nice change.
