If you go to the HoF in Toronto you can see all the old cups/bases.

As a hockey player it is imperative you make a pilgrimmage there at least one point in your life. I made my first in 10th grade, great place, great town.

at this point, they've started removing rings and replacing them, i think.

You thought correctly.

# It takes 13 years to fill the ring of the Stanley Cup with names of winners
# Once a bottom ring is full, another one of the same size is removed from the top of the base and retired at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto

When I went to see the SC at the HoF the 'dummy' cup had a big dent in it. Forget the story behind the dent, but it was a good laugh.

Perhaps this is the story.

The 1999 Dallas Stars' Stanley Cup party was hosted at the house of Stars defenceman Craig Ludwig and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul. At the party Stars forward Guy Carbonneau attempted to throw the Cup from the upstairs deck into the house's Crown Royal shaped pool below. The Cup caught the lip of the pool, producing a large dent.[

It might be the story, anyone know if they let players parade around with the orginal or the dummy?

The original bowl is on display in the HoF. A duplicate cup is the one used in ceremonies and promotions. I'm pretty sure there's a third cup too, which i think goes on display in the HoF when the 2nd one is on the road.

edit: here's a good read for those interested in the cup. That engraving of the 04-05 season bums me out. "season not played".
