In my opinion there are many more planets than that in our solar system.

They can add as many planets as they like, as long as the NEVER rename Uranus!

Wow, there is SOO much disorder in the organization of planets, asteroids, and other celestial objects already! A lot of things in space have been named over and over and over as new things every time. Its complete disorder really. Now they are just going to fuck it up even more.

But I do think that they are getting a bit carried away now, they find a lump of rock floating out there and consider it a planet? how come we never saw it earlier?

As far as I understand it, these things are the same size as or bigger than Pluto. So, either Pluto isn't a planet, or they are all planets. I guess they're going with the "more the merrier" approach.

I don't think they are very visible with normal light from earth. They are mostly using the orbital mechanics of other planets to determine what else could be close. For instance they put in all the data for the known solar system, make a computer model, study it and look for differences from what is actually observed. If something is off they look for evidence of what that object may be and where it may be.

We are also advancing in optics and non-visible radiation detection techniques.

if they kept hte definition of planets they had before we'd probably end up with dozens of new planets in several years

If they didnt drop Pluto then they were going to redefine what a planet was to anything that was round, which would have made our moon a planet, and about 50 other objects that they've been keeping track of. Its a shame that Pluto was declassified a planet but its better than thinking our moon is anything other than a satellite.

no wootoow, it would have meant anything with gravity that caused the body to become round that wasnt a satelitte(ie moon) would have been a planet, in order to eliminate kuiper belt objects and Ceres the last defining trait was added. the object must have cleared its orbit path (asteroids, etc.

so no moons would have been planets but alot of seemingly insignificant bodies would have become planets.
