Chronologically, The Magician's Nephew takes place first.

But C.S. Lewis wrote Lion Witch & Wardrobe first. Kinda like the Star Wars movies. It's better if you watch episode IV and up before starting with the prequel.

It's much better if you read LW & W first. The magic is unfolded best in that story.

Date of first publication:

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe - 1950
Prince Caspian - 1951
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - 1952
The Silver Chair - 1953
The Horse and His Boy - 1954
The Magician's Nephew - 1955
The Last Battle - 1956

Actually, to be fair, C.S. Lewis actually stated after he published "The Magician's Nephew" that he intended that to be the first book read in the series. It talks about the history of Narnia and about the creation of the world. However, I would no more ask someone to read "The Magician's Nephew" first than I would ask someone who's never read Tolkein to read "The Silmarillion". First of all, because no one gives a dang about the creation of a world they know nothing about...and secondly, because it totally takes the surprise out of the magic we see when the children first discover Narnia!

I think this reader states it best:

Quote:
Reading these books in chronological order spoils all of the surprise and magic out of the first visit to Narnia (in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe), because we already know what's going on. You're not supposed to know about the lightpole or who the professor is yet! Things don't always need to be put in chronological order. If you're going to read them, please read them in the correct order: 1) The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, 2) Prince Caspian, 3)The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, 4) The Silver Chair, 5) The Horse and His Boy, 6) The Magician's Nephew, and 7) The Last Battle

Not a problem, hon. I only learned the truth a couple years ago from my husband. He's read the series many times. Most of the time, "The Magician's Nephew" is published as the fist of the series, just as C.S. Lewis wanted it.

Holy **** it looks awesome. I saw the beginning of the trailer and didn't know what was happening, and then Lucy pulls the sheet off of the Wardrobe and I saw what it was.. and my eyes were glued to the screen for the rest of the preview.

..looks amazing.

Yes, when I saw Sith today, I did see the trailer or teaser, rather, for the Chronicles of Narnia film. I have to say, it looks quite entertaining.

....about the Harry Potter series: There's more?!?!?
