Default Australian Courts are weak

Does this seem wrong to anyone else?

JULIE Haklane lived a double life, hiding her work in the sex trade and the relationship that finally took her life from her family.

Her killer, ex-boyfriend Abdul Razzak Hamoui, 31, was today sentenced in New South Wales Supreme Court to a minimum eight years' jail for her manslaughter.

Ms Haklane's body was found slumped in the passenger seat of her car on a suburban street in Fairfield almost three days after she disappeared on June 25, 2001. The 24-year-old had been bound and strangled.

Justice David Kirby told the court today Ms Haklane first met Hamoui in 1996, but when her family became aware of the Lebanese-born man's criminal past they moved to split up the couple.

After that, she kept their relationship a secret.

"The Haklane family plainly disapproved of Julie's relationship. They sought to bring it to an end by taking her to Lebanon for an extended period," Justice Kirby told the court.

"Ms Haklane became pregnant a number of times, terminating the pregnancy each time. She chose not to disclose these matters, or the details of her relationship, to her family.

"She even began working as a prostitute or sex worker at various massage parlours in the western suburbs."

Five months before her death, the relationship spiralled out of control when Ms Haklane started seeing another man.

"Mr Hamoui was, understandably, not happy about Julie Haklane's new relationship," Justice Kirby said.

"Mr Hamoui was both jealous and volatile ... (his) behaviour in the weeks and months before Julie Haklane's death can only be described as disturbed ... he strangled her, probably as a result of loss of self control."

When sentencing Hamoui, Justice Kirby labelled the crime "cruel, brutal and awful".

"The life that was taken was that of a young woman ... she was much loved. She had extraordinary vitality and energy," he said.

"Her loss, and the horror concerning the circumstances of her loss, has devastated her family.

"One can only imagine the terror felt by Ms Haklane as these events unfolded ... there can be no doubt that the victim suffered."

Justice Kirby sentenced Hamoui to 11 years' jail, with a non-parole period of eight years.

He took into account Hamoui's good behaviour in prison and his return to the Muslim faith.

Hamoui will be eligible for parole on November 2, 2009.

I can see what you mean in this case, but as a whole I think that Aussie courts are pretty fair. They don't just look at the one act, they look at the offenders past, values and thing like that when deciding a sentence. Although, my opinion may be a it biased :-p

He bound and strangled her, that equates a much harsher sentence in my book.

8 years for killing someone? I want to live there. Here in the states you would get Life or the Death Sentence.

Trust me, you dont want to live here?! That is, unless you're planning on murdering someone! Is that why you think Australia seems like a good place to live? Well I'll tell you something, Im disgusted at the sentence Abdul was given, and I know him, Im one Of Julies best friends. Let me tell you, anyone that takes a life is weak and gutless and should be put to death, an eye for an eye. Julie was a beautiful and loving girl. And for the record, not a prostitute! I dont know why an article would say something like that, its speaking ill of the dead. God bless Julie. RIP

Maybe one of Julies friends did a search on her name several years after the murder and it led her here?

We would be proto-strafers, and they would be paleo-gamers. They would wonder at our savagery and primitive tool-making skills.
If they are anything like us, they would then make fun of Flymo's mom.
