I personally wouldn't recommend VB to anyone. Learn Python or some other similar language.

XML, .NET, and C# all current standards in the advanced web development department. xHTML is used to make the dynamic web pages these days, but its all moving to Flash soon, so advanced Flash ActionScript is going to be pretty popular again.

EDIT: PHP is a big one too, I sort of left that out because it is an obvious one for me.

It's not something i would urge you to do, but if you want to get one programming language on your back i suggest you learn vb. Because 9 times out of 10 colleges these days tend to work with it, i don't i use Visual Studio.net But i suggest that you learn vb as a good starter language then move on to something else which is a little step harder like Java, php or asp. I suggest that you becareful when choosing a C language i personally hate C#, i prefer C++ simplicity rocks! I'd go with C++ if i were you.

From Eric Gunnerson, who wrote a book on it and teaches classes about C++ and C#:

"So, if what I say above is true, the conclusion looks pretty clear - use C#. Not really much surprise considering who came up with the list.

But there are things that C++ has going for it, and it really depends on the kind of code you're writing which language is a better choice. In broad strokes (and in my opinion, of course), if you're doing user applications (either rich client or web), choosing C# is a no-brainer. When you start getting towards lower-level things like services or apps with lots of interop, the decision is less clear.
"

This was clipped from: Eric Gunnerson's C# Compendium : C# vs C++ Check it out if you want a different opinion on it. I have to agree with Eric on this one.
