Default Question about a sound system for my car.

So I'm in the market for a nice sound system for my Jeep Liberty. One of the guys that works in the warehouse at the office I work at says he has some connections and can get me a really good deal on a sound system. Here's the quote his friend gave me over the phone today:

Pioneer 12 inch 800 watt subwoofer
Sanyo Amp

Both of those and installation for 260. Now, I asked for the exact product codes so I can do some more research online and he said he'll call me back tomorrow. But, does that sound like a good deal and are those reliable companies in terms of sound systems? Thanks in advance.

That 800W is probably the PMPO (Peak Momentary Power Output) rating of the sub woofer, which is actually completely useless for any practical measure. To draw that much power, the wire would need to carry almost 60A, which corresponds to 16mm^2 wire, which is quite thick. You should find out the RMS or continuous power rating of the sub, which is likely to be around 150W to 250W, which is still alot.

Shouldn't this be in automotive?

I have never heard of a Sanyo amp... What is the wattage on that? I would get a more well known brand.

--edit: Just like Snoog said, make sure you get the RMS wattage, not the peak.

Do you already have a stereo? How is he planning on connecting the amp to the exisiting system? Does it have integral crossovers, or will you need to get those seperately?

If you are kinda handy, you could probably do it yourself. Crutchfield is pretty good, because they have all the books and adapters and all that for your car:

Discounts Jungle is a lot cheaper, but they don't give you all that support, and their selection is a little more limited:

I forgot about automotive. I already have a stereo in the car, 6 speakers. I've got no clue how he plans on doing any of this. He's supposed to be calling me back here at work with the exact product numbers and names so I can do some more research on them.

I was asking if your stereo was stock or aftermarket. Is this a legit business, or just "some guy?" I would wait on him to get back with you, then research a little bit. I would also ask around, see what kinda work he does.

You may also be able get some better equipment and just have him install it, if you don't want to or can't do it yourself. Something else to keep in mind.

I would stay away from that Sanyo amp, but that is just me.

lol, as you can see I don't know much about this stuff. My current stereo is stock. And I've decided I'm going to wait on this and do some more research and wait until closer to the new year. Because really he is just some guy. Basically he told me, me and the guy from work would drive down tomorrow, pay half, he'd get the stuff, come back Friday and he'd have the equipment and install it. And he hasnt called me back and given me the exact product names that I asked for.

The sub is a Pioneer 12 inch W306DVC. Information on it can be found right here..

And the amp is a Power Akoustic TS620-2 and information on it can be found right here..

He offered me that for 260. I turned it down.

I'm gonna wait until closer to Christmas to see what to get.

PV-

Good call. There is a difference between having a stereo, and then having one that sounds good. You may want to upgrade what you have now before you install a sub. I am not sure what kind of stereos jeeps come with, but factory equipment usually isn't the best.

I would start with a new deck and new aftermarket speakers to replace the factory ones (maybe an amp, too. Depends on how loud you want it). Then look into getting a sub.

Right now everything I've got is factory. It's a regular stereo with six speakers. I wanna get a deck that'll hook up directly with my iPod because I hate the radio thing I have for it. Then I'll get some speakers/amp/sub.

I'm definitely going with JL when I do end up getting the sound system. But, I want to get it at an actual store where they can fix it if something goes wrong.

Either alpine/infinity are the ones worth going for.

Ill see about emailing a few people who know about this.

JL subs rock,

Overall it sounds like a good sound system.
