Default The Engineer Thread

I figure why not make this with 2 other classes already having a thread.

My tip that is often overlooked, which is most applicable when youre defending (ie, red team). As soon as the round begins, place a teleporter entrance, AND THEN run back into the spawn to resupply yourself. In the grand scheme of things, you only waste a couple of seconds of setup.

Likewise, dont forget to place the exit also (im def. guilty of this). Sure, you may think want to get that sentry to L3 as fast as possible, but from experience ive learned that its more helpful to get a teleporter up and running to get troops to teh front line faster. 2 or 3 teammates alive and fighting is often more invaluable than a single sentry.

Also, know the maps, and as an engineer, know where the ammo is spawned. Building sentries close to it will help you upgrade the sentry faster.

* if you've just built a level 3 sentry for the love of god don't just run off and leave it to fend for itself, as the chances are a spy will come along and zap it, stand by and guard it.

When moving fair away from spawn, build a dispenser first thing. Iv seen plenty of people build a turret and just stand there and have to wait to upgrade it because of a lack of points. If you can, try and sneak into the enemy base to get a teleporter exit built, on the intelligence maps. On the control point maps, I normally place it just behind the frontlines. Alot of ppl actually use the teleporters if u place them right in front of your spawn where your team will see it.
You can destroy your equipment. If the frontline moves forward on the capture maps, dont leave your turret stuck at the back. Destroy it and make another one closer to the frontlines.

The Pyro is your Best Friend
Once you've set up shop in a crucial position (I consider 'shop' as your L3 Sentry Gun, a Dispenser, and a Teleporter Exit), you'll feel a lot more secure if you've got a Pyro defending the site. The Dispenser will keep him healthy and full of pyro juice while he "sprays for mites"(read: sweeps the area for spies), and your turret should take care of most long-range threats... just beware demo men and snipers.

The best was that I've built sentries recently is to build them where it is easy access to the other team to shoot it down, but at the same time you have to have a wall next to you to heal it, why? Because no one is going to come up and around the corner to shoot you down as long as your sentry is there (except for a spy)... So all you gotta do is keep pounding away to repair your sentry while your dispenser behind you keeps supplying you... It's a great way for an attacking team to push. Also a great way to defend a CP.

the only issue i have with that is that snipers can pick away at the sentry's health, or even more likely, a medic+heavy can really drain the sentry's health. while you can sit behind it hammering away, there were many times where the heavy's health outlasted the rate at which the dispenser refueled my ammo.... meanign ive run out of ammo repairing it before the heavy shooting at it died.

That scenario is rare. I've rarely run out of ammo fixing my sentry before and the only time I have was when I was trying to upgrade and fix it at the same time... That must have been quite a long gun battle... I'd expect the Heavy to run out of ammo before the engy running out.
