Default The Spy Thread

I stumbled upon this forum, and realized it's pretty young. I think it'd be great if we could have a stickied thread dedicated to each class! I'll start by posting some Spy tactics and warnings that up and coming 007's might need to know ... see below and let's get this party started :P

YOU CAN DISGUISE YOURSELF AS YOUR OWN TEAM
I find a lot of people don't leverage this enough. The opposition is always choosing classes to counter the classes that they see on your team. Use this to your advantage - make them think there are extra pyros on the team, seeing snipers across the field make enemies avoid wide open spaces, forcing them into tunnels and clustered areas.

USE YOUR LAST DISGUISE BUTTON
The default button for this is B, and pressing this button will revert to the last [enemy] disguise you had selected/used. For example, if I'm on BLU team, I'll disguise myself to be a BLU Engineer before leaving spawn, so anyone who sees will expect a BLU engineer. When I get closer to the RED Sentry Guns (SGs), I'll hit my last disguise, and the BLU will turn to RED, and I'll be able to move in quick to sap, backstab, and then quickly disguise back to RED engineer.

CALL FOR MEDIC
When you're disguised as an enemy, your calls for medic go to the opposing team. Use that to convince the enemy of your allegiance.

Indeed, all of which I did not know, thanks....well I knew about disguising as your own team, but I never thought about it that way, pretty clever!

I dont know whether this is just common sense or a tip, but if your disguised against an engi and a lvl 3 turret, sap the turret first. I killed the engi first and lets just say not everything went to plan.
Also, when playing spy, I tend to face my team, and walk backwards. Instead of facing the enemy, which might seem a little suspicious, I face my own team, making it look like im on the assault.
Use the cloak. When I first played spy. I did not use the cloak at all during the first hour or so. Now I cloak, get behind the enemy, disguise, and im set for some knifing/sabotage.

ALL AN ACT
This tactic requires the aid of someone on your team, usually someone with some fire power, like a soldier or a heavy. Let's call this your accomplice. Your team is BLU.

Select a weaker RED class, like a sniper, medic, or engineer. Have your accomplish open fire on you as you run toward the enemy base, calling for medic. Naturally, all the enemy fire will go to the accomplice (who may have to sacrifice him/herself to get you behind enemy lines).

This is another way you can earn your enemy's trust. Now get in there and stab some backs!!

A few other tips... it may help to coordinate with friendly spies. If you stay together in disguise, its less likely the enemy will suspect spies when they see 2 of their 3 teammates together. Also, by sticking together, you can eliminate those pesky sentries a lot easier. One you saps the turret, and as the engy is busy repairing, the other can backstab him. He wouldnt see it coming.

On that note, after sapping the sentry, make some space, hopefully the engy wont know who did it. Regardless, chances are hell immediately go to wrench his turret. If youre quick enough, you can back stab while wrenching.

Lastly, you take the speed of your disguise. So if you want to get to the front lines faster, disguise yourself as a scout, then right before you hit the front lines, put on your desired disguise.

Dont bother taking transports, bc a trail of sparkles in your teams color will follow you once you leave the exit, even if youre cloaked.

Oh, and NEVER disguise yourself as a medic. if a medic just runs around and doesnt heal you when youre calling for it, dont you think its a bit suspicious?

My advice is to never disguise yourself as a scout. Why?

It's really obvious to me that a spy is a scout because I run just as fast as them when I am a soldier (or any other class)

No idea why, but I always have the most success disguised as an engineer. I got no idea why because an engineer should be building most of the time or upgrading lol.

I'm not sure whether or not a spy takes on the speed of your disguise - you'd see a lot more spies wearing scout disguises if that were the case. But I do agree the engineer is one of the easier classes to wear - i think simply because an engineer doesn't shoot, and runs around a map to build support stations.

Also ... disguising yourself as an enemy spy really confuses things, and allows you to cloak right in front of the enemy's eyes.

I think that you dont get the speed boost of the scout, but if you disguise as a heavy your slower

if i am ever a spy (which i rarely am), i usually disguise myself as a enemy spy just so when their team sees a spy come out of the tunnel, they will think theat i just got back from cloaking or whatnot

Found this vid on youtube, its quite good, alot of handy tips: YouTube - TF2 - How to play the spy.

My Question:I always shoot my teammates, to check if theyr a spy. Recently iv been coming up against alot of people like this who just seem to know I am a spy. They just shoot me. Iv tried bluffing, just standing there looking at them like they'r an idiot but its not working. One game I just couldnt play spy at all, I just kept getting shot. Do you think I was disguised as that person even though I wasnt his class? Also can anybody think of a way to combat these trigger happy people?

I think I saw someone who took a name of a different class.
