Default DOTW: Battlefield 3 Special Edition

There is a lot of games out there you can buy special editions for. I personally own three times Starcraft (with each of the three races) as well as Quake 3 in the tin box. I also pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto IV special edition and I am sure this wont be the last of it's kind.

There was a special edition of Battlefield 2142 although not very well spread or highly advertised. It's special content was limited to some making off videos which you could download for free as well. Not to slight that, I enjoyed watching it and the DICE boys and girls know how to make movies, but it left a little bit of a stale taste in my mouth.

Now BF3 is approaching and what will happen this time? Is a special edition even wanted? What could be in it? What should be in it? What shouldn't?

They should actually bring out and prove the game is worth it before they start making special editions...

Special Editions usually cost more and need to be worth the extra content. If what you receive can later be obtained for free, that's a sham if not fraud.

If they make it it should include at minimum special artwork and a way to customize your character to know it is special edition. Whether that is a symbol/color by/of your name, starting out with extra unlocks, or a special weapon (that's not play inhibiting!).

My COD4 SE included a nice little book with some nifty artwork with unseen concept and development artwork. It also included a keycode to download the official strategy guide. hmmm, maybe I should take advantage of that and go download it . . .

Anyway, NCSoft/ArenaNet has done a fabulous work of this in their GuioldWars games. The Collectors editions usually come with artwork, fold out maps, a trinket of some kind (hey some people like this stuff I guess and pay good money for it on ebay), and usually several ingame perk as well including exclusive emotes and specialized/customized weapons. Sometimes they even throw in extra keycodes to get into betas, but always include them for other games to sample.

Maybe some bunny ears in camo colours that attach to your head set to wear.
Or a T-shirt that says Redlining is Fun-F U-I fly solo!
LOL

I love my BF2142 T-Shirt, the memory stick dogtag but also the normal dogtag i got at the community day A good sturdy box for the game with a few extras in it wouldnt hurt the game sales IMHO.

I would like to have some sort of poster to put up on the wall. The levels and environments always struck me as pretty damn neat when you look at the distance. A nice picture of that wouldnt come amiss.

Ok, seriously this time.

A special mail in to receive a key, code, utilily that would allow you to put the disks away legitmately without resorting to the many ways that (ahem) some people use to protect their investment.
T-shirts are fine, but again there would have to be some way of ensuring that you could get the size that fits you right.
Movies, developer books/diaries, concept art, game music are of no real use or worth the extra cost for me.

T-Shirts usually come in XXL, if it doesnt fit you in that size, you got a slight problem

Ability to not use the disk is a good idea. I did that with BF2 and BF2142, using emulators to run the disk image off my harddisk so I don't have to have the disk spinning all the time or move it around and scratch it all to hell.

EA + continual support for games = EPIC fail

Special editions will probably be made for 'booster pack'type addons, and will probably be badly done while implementing some badly done skins with no innnovation in gameplay.

Booster packs just separate the gaming community with crap content.
Look to mods real gameplay innovations.
