They don't have to worry about it as in real life, there are two different verisons of the "Little Bird" the MH-6, which is the transport varient with the bucket seats on the sides, and the AH-6, which is the armed varient usually with 7.62mm miniguns and FFAR rocket pods.

Yeah, soldiers really would and still do sit on the sides of these choppers. It wasn't too uncommon to see this in the Vietnam war. Mind you, life expectancy in this position is low.
