PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! DO NOT Install System Mechanic 6!!! There have been numerous reports in alot of the top Tech forums as well as reviews on ZiffDavis.net and cnet.com that this version of System Mechanic will CRASH your PC! I used to use System Mechanic 5 all the time, that version worked very well. Now I use VCom's Fix-it Utilities Pro 6. I is very stable and does just about everything that System Mechanic used to do. It also has one of the Best virus scanners built right in from the #1 company for virus detection - Trend Micro.

You made a very good suggestion though, that freeing up you memory will make BF2 run a WHOLE LOT Smoother. I can attest to that as a fact. But there is a better and easier way to do it without installing this dangerous software. There are also other stand alone programs that will defrag your system memory, but you really don't need them becasue when you run ClearMem, it starts you out fresh by clearing out all the crap that windows loads as well as other programs you may have been running before you want to jump into BF2 and start dealing out some pain.

Here is the info from a previous thread I started here a week ago:

Here is some information that I wanted to share with my BF2 brethern. I found a little secret that can boost your BF2 performance! It's a little program from Microsoft called ClearMem.exe. I just started using it everytime right before I launch BF2 and it has made a rather noticable difference in my performance levels. I keep a link to it on my quick-launch bar. Also I have found that if you run it 2-3 times before launching BF2 it gives you even more free memory. I went from having 775 Megs free to 900 Meg!

Enjoy!

Here is a brief description of CleamMem and two links to go grab this little gem!

Download ClearMem from FixMyXP.com

Download ClearMem from Guru3D.com

This tool clears out your current data sets in RAM. Clearmem (clearmem.exe)—Forces pages out of physical memory and reduces the size of running processes’ working sets to a minimum. When you run this tool, the system pauses because of excessive high-priority activity associated with trimming the working sets. To run this tool, your paging file must be at least as large as physical memory.

What type of crashes are we talking about here? Like IRQL errors? Or NVdisp.dll errors?

My PC is overclocked, and I know BF2 doesn't like that very much. Recently did a fresh install of XP and it ran fine for a few weeks and I'm back to getting BSOD's w/ the errors mentioned above. Is this program a remedy to these errors? Or should I just deal w/ it?

u can try the method i used of deleting the files in this folder. make a backup first,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

I have the solution, or at least what seems to be working so far - format your frickin harddrive. Yes folks, all you need to do to get BF2 working decently is format your harddrive! Simple yah? '

Honestly, I did just do that, and I have played about 6 rounds so far without a ctd. Still getting a weird a$$ freeze up though occasionally in the middle of a round that I was also getting before the format.

Basic maintenance has solved a lot of issues for a lot of players.

Defrag your harddrive.
Make sure you don't have a ton of background apps running druing patch installs or while playing.
Do scans for viruses/spyware (try this link out if you haven't already: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ )
And of cource, make sure your drivers are up to date.

All this might sound obvious, but it's suprising howmany people will scream "bad patch" before even trying the basics.

Another tip specificly for 1.3 is to lower your setting. There does seem to be a RAM issue (I'm thinking it might have something to do with their paging system) that is causing higher than normal RAM use... and bad results when you fill it. Lowering your settings might be an effective band-aid solution for you until they hopefully resolve this with 1.31.

I deleted everything out of My documents from EA. including battle for middle earth as it turns out haha but that was crap anyway.
Now when I put the disc in it doesn't even load up, and in ADD and remove it a software icon that will not uninstall.. right. ???

All of this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the CTD people experience when pressing the JOIN button.

Can you prove that?

I've had that particular CTD come up once since 1.3 came out... and that one time I was running "dirty". I hadden't done my usual cleanup steps to ensure I had as much free RAM as possible.

It could have been a fluke that it occured the one time I had forgotten to flush my RAM, but it seems to me that there could be a connection.

Either way, it never hurts to cover the basics or attempt to resolve your problems. Sure, it's easier to get mad about it... but that doesn't accomplish a whole lot.

The fact of the matter is that no game should be this rediculously hard to get to run right - or even run at all for that matter.

Lol welcome to last year. I had Sytem Mechanic 4 when it came out, then 5 and 6. It doesn't do that. Why do I still get crashes all the time and connection problems?
